For 2019, El Paso Water’s Charity of Choice Committee chose to advocate for the voiceless and raise awareness about a small nonprofit that rescues and rehabilitates abused animals. Committee members announced Law N Paws as the 2019 EPWater Charity of Choice at the March Public Service Board meeting.

Launched in 2017, El Paso Police Department Detective Vanessa Acosta established Law N Paws to rescue four-legged victims of animal cruelty. The nonprofit operates out of a temporary shelter.

“Detective Acosta saw the need for Law N Paws and put in her own time, money and dedication,” said Senior Network Administrator Israel Chavez, the 2019 Charity of Choice Chair. Chavez set the fundraising goal at $75,000.

Help needed

Some of the special animal rescues under Law N Paws’ care are under protective order as their owners are under investigation for animal abuse. Under Texas law, pets are considered property and may serve as evidence in criminal cases. The ultimate goal of the nonprofit is to place rehabilitated pets in loving homes.

“These animals don’t have a voice; they are like children and the elderly,” Acosta said. “We need to take care of them. A lot of pets don’t make it out alive.”

Detective Vanessa Acosta adopted Sweet Pea, a rescue.Since its inception, Law N Paws has rescued more than 200 victims of animal cruelty. The majority of the animals rescued are Pit Bulls and Chihuahuas. The nonprofit provides veterinary care for the abused animals and focuses on education and outreach for the public on reporting animal cruelty.

Hearing that many cases were linked to domestic violence moved Charity of Choice Committee members.

“We learned some people stay in an abusive relationship because they don’t have a place to take their pet,” said committee member Elijio Myers, Water Service Worker Supervisor. One of the nonprofit’s goals is eventually to offer temporary shelter to the pets of abused spouses who seek refuge at the Center Against Sexual and Family Violence.

Fundraising season

Charity of Choice Committee members are excited to kick off the fundraising season for the benefit of Law N Paws.

“Along with everybody else, I want to raise awareness about Law N Paws,” said committee member Yesenia Castro, Utility Engineer Associate.

Organizers are planning new fundraising events – such as an escape room team challenge and a dog walk/run – to join old favorites – such as the fishing derby and a volleyball tournament.
