New pond is more than a flood-control structure

El Paso Water is celebrating the completion of Austin Pond, one of several projects in Central El Paso that improves flood control in the Government Hills drainage system. The $2.2 million project will collect about 3.5 million gallons of stormwater, keeping it off neighborhood streets. Wrought-iron gates surround the pond along with walking paths and landscaping for the neighborhood to enjoy.
"This project is not only tremendously functional, but it adds an attractive detail to this residential neighborhood," Mr. Balliew said, adding that Austin Pond is one of four ponds in the area. "This was essentially a weed-filled lot that was vacant for many, many years. From that, we made a beautiful facility."

With oversight by the Public Service Board, El Paso Water provides water, wastewater, reclamation and stormwater management services.
