Multi-phased project will recharge aquifer with river water, reclaimed water
EL PASO – A portion of Northeast El Paso will soon have a new landscape that will strengthen El Paso’s water portfolio and support long-range drought resilience. The groundbreaking ceremony marks the first phase of EPWater’s Aquifer Storage and Recharge project. Phase one entails the creation of the Enhanced Arroyo Infiltration Facility, a two-mile long infiltration basin that will resemble a stream channel.
During plentiful years, EPWater will take treated Rio Grande water and use it to recharge the aquifer. To expand the amount of water pumped into the aquifer, water treated to drinking water standards from the Fred Hervey Water Reclamation Facility will also be piped to the arroyo for infiltration. The arroyo will also serve as an amenity for the community with walking trails and landscaping.
